Materials shape our perception and comfort within a space

Materials surround us, and the way we experience them depends more on our psychology than on their physical properties. We are used to associating wood with warmth and comfort, stone with solidity, and glass with transparency and fragility. Today, material choices are no longer only a matter of budget or durability but an investment in our state of mind. Metal, at first glance cold and hard, becomes a good example of how perception can change. There is a subtle relationship between psychology and design, and metal is a material that challenges, stimulates and reorganises space.

In a home, metals can play many roles. On the physical level they are structural elements, visible or hidden supports for floors and walls. Decoratively, they become balustrades, furniture frames or lighting details. How we perceive them is tied to an entire cultural tradition. Metal has been associated with industry, mechanics and progress. In post‑industrial cities, steel or wrought iron objects are often cited as relics of a bygone era. When used in furniture, a slender metal frame can give an impression of lightness. A metal table, for example, can look visually lighter than a massive wooden one, even if structurally it is very strong. This transparency gives the space a sense of breadth and allows light to circulate. Conversely, a metal balustrade painted a dark colour can clearly define a space without closing it off, elegantly stimulating awareness of boundaries. From a psychological comfort standpoint, clearer definition of spaces contributes to a sense of order, especially in compact urban homes.

Another aspect relates to acoustics. Metal can conduct sound, and hard surfaces tend to reflect vibrations, which is not always beneficial in a home. However, through design and appropriate finishes, noise can be controlled. Perforated metal walls, for example, can absorb sound and disperse it evenly, reducing echoes. Adding textiles, rugs and soft materials near metal elements balances the sound environment. This combination of rigid and adaptive contributes to comfort and supports the theory that a thoughtful mix of materials both stimulates and calms us.

Beyond sensory aspects, metal carries a strong symbolic charge. In the history of art and architecture, metal has represented power, modernity and innovation. These values are transmitted subconsciously when we enter a space dominated by metallic elements. There is a feeling of control and stability that metal conveys, similar to how one feels when wearing a robust bracelet or heavy ring. Psychology recognises that materials influence our emotions through touch. Metals, through their density and temperature, can suggest safety and seriousness. When we rest our hand on a steel railing and feel the initial coolness, our brain interprets this sensation and associates it with solidity, which can amplify a sense of confidence.

At the same time, metallic materials can be unpredictable, having the ability to be turned into a variety of textures: glossy, matte, brushed, oxidised. This richness allows designers to personalise spaces subtly without resorting to excessive ornamentation. Choosing between these finishes becomes a psychological decision: gloss inspires clarity, patina suggests nostalgia, and a matte look brings calm.

An example of cultural influence on perception can be seen in recent design trends. At the 2024 Milan Design Week, fully metal furniture was a central theme. Many brands presented objects made entirely of aluminium, steel and copper, exploring the purity of material. Designers spoke about rejecting excess and the need to simplify. In a context where homes are getting smaller, metal furniture, with its thin structures and vibrant finishes, represents a way to keep spaces open and bright. In Japan, metal is used for compact stairs, transformable tables and modular structures that reconfigure easily, reflecting the need for flexibility. In Scandinavia, metals are combined with light wood to create bright interiors, where thin metal structures become the invisible support for Nordic design.

Sustainability is another psychologically important element. Metals can be recycled indefinitely without losing their properties. This durability translates into a sense of security and peace of mind, the idea that the objects around us won’t become waste immediately. Reports on the circular economy highlight that metals, including steel and aluminium, have some of the highest recycling rates in industry. Choosing metals for personal furniture is therefore an ethical statement and contributes to a positive perception of space.

The importance of the psychology of materials becomes clear when we analyse how we feel in a metal-rich space. Colour, texture and finish can influence perceptions of temperature and comfort.
